The age of aluminum canoes dawned after World War II, when aircraft maker Grumman took the techniques used for bending and riveting aluminum for aircrafts and applied them to making canoes.Grumman did go with .040" on some larger models for a time, but went back to the .050" later. This is where the story came from that they "cheapened" up. I've checked with my micrometer and you can also feel the difference between .040 and .050 quite easily. If you have a Grumman that is a G-17-LW, you have a rare and somewhat valuable canoe.
